Since arriving back in Manchester, I have been making it my mission to slowly visit all of my favourite old haunts and as far as cake goes, Hey Little Cupcake! always had me covered when it came to needing a hit of the sweet stuff.
Or in this case, four hits. Two signature bakes; the Nutella Cookie cupcake and the Oreo Brownie cupcake, and two from the new Christmas collection; the Snowflake cupcake and the Christmas Log cupcake.
Nutella Cookie Cupcake
I don’t know anyone who dislikes Nutella, do you? If you are looking for a balance of flavours and a surprise with every bite, this cupcake could be the one for you. The light vanilla sponge is complemented with a rich and generous piping of chocolate buttercream, a scattering of hidden chocolate chips and a delicious smearing of Nutella. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a bite-sized, chocolate chip cookie sat on top.
Oreo Brownie Cupcake
This cupcake isn’t for the feint hearted and packs a sweet punch that will leave you high on a sugar buzz for the remainder of the day. The sponge has a dense and gooey consistency on the inside, whilst maintaining that satisfyingly chewy layer on the outside; something you’d expect from a real brownie. If that still isn’t enough brownie for you, there are chunks of the stuff sprouting from the sweet, vanilla buttercream and when you take a bite, you will find an Oreo, baked right into the sponge itself.
One of the six cupcakes available in the Christmas collection and an absolute gem. The delicate flavours of the vanilla sponge and white chocolate buttercream are complemented by an almighty crunch with each bite, from the edible sparkles. This one is almost too pretty to eat and looks like it should be hanging from a tree.
Christmas Log Cupcake
One of the more simpler designs, but by no means should it be overlooked. This is definitely one for the chocolate lovers, with a chocolate sponge, chocolate buttercream and a chocolate ganache layer hidden between the two for good measure. All topped off with a cute little holly decoration and a dusting of icing sugar.
You can visit Hey Little Cupcake! in Manchester’s Spinningfields, or head to one of their Selfridges concessions, either in the Trafford Centre or Birmingham’s Bull Ring. Alternatively, you can visit their website for bookings, cake orders and price listings.
